The beautiful and headstrong Victoria Noble has lofty dreams for her life, but none of them involve being wicked. Despite her humble existence as a maid at The Seaside Inn, she intends to marry a wealthy man. This hope is challenged when Henry Blakeley, a kind-hearted wanderer, enters her life and sees in her every admirable quality she yearns to actually possess. As Victoria attempts to balance her desires for wealth and love, tragedy strikes, sending her running into the arms of Alden Knight, an intriguing and affluent gentleman.

Navigating the complexities of the upper class as well as motherhood to her willful twin daughters is more difficult than Victoria ever imagined, especially when she finds herself suddenly alone. All hope seems lost until a widowed Henry reappears in her life with his own angelic daughter, Ella. Victoria believes her dreams are finally coming true, only to have them shattered, leaving her heartbroken and reluctantly dependent on Ella's kindness and humility. Years later, amidst the excitement and commotion of a royal ball, a hardened Victoria is forced to confront her past choices and their consequences.

Told from the perspective of the “wicked stepmother,” this poignant and realistic Cinderella retelling explores the power of forgiveness and honor, as well as the intricacies of family relationships. Victoria Noble's journey through love, loss, and motherhood is a powerful reminder that the path to redemption is never walked alone.

Editorial Reviews

"Telling this classic story from the wicked stepmother’s point of view is a gutsy thing to take on, but the author did a great job. She doesn’t shy away from holding her accountable, but the story becomes both a cautionary tale and a tale of mercy, forgiveness, faith, and love. I really enjoyed it!"

"Oh my heart! This story tugged on my heart and brought out the tears. Have some tissues handy! I don't know about you but I've read several fairytale retellings that focus on the villain of the story and have found them fascinating. What led them to be the way they were? What struggles did they face that led them to make certain choices? What led them to harden their hearts? What led them to be angry and evil? The author said the following quote was her motivation in telling Cinderella's (or Ella in this version) Stepmother's story. (It's also quoted at the beginning of the book.

"Henry Wadsworth Longfellow said, 'If we could read the secret history of our enemies, we should find in each man's life sorrow and suffering enough to disarm all hostility.'

"Isn't that just a powerful quote. We don't know what others have experienced or seen or suffered to lead them on their paths in life. Don't judge.

"Victoria has some hard circumstances from the beginning of her life. She has people come into it that teach her by example and their love but she loses them and the influence of others who only use her or want her for the work she can do and not for love. These shape her in ways that sometimes feel too insurmountable to overcome.

"Her aspirations block some of the good that can come into her life but at the same time those aspirations are to survive and be provided for. Normal human instincts.

"I loved how the author wrote the book from Victoria's perspective and we were able to be fully immersed in her thought processes and her emotions. Loved it! But be warned you'll feel those emotions with her and feel her sorrow and pain and her desires to do good and yearnings to feel Love and be loved!

"If you haven't read Ella, I highly recommend you do so! It is one of my absolute favorite Cinderella retellings, and I have read a lot! Seriously you'll love it! This story parallels that one in the last part of it. If you haven't read it, you'll be fine reading this one, but I love it so much and loved knowing what happens in it to how this one connects. So good!!!

"Content: Clean. There are some moments of mild abuse. Nothing graphic. Mostly just a couple characters having a switch taken to the palms of their hands and leaving sores. No language or anything further than a couple kisses."
