A love match would not do. She would make an advantageous match—a brilliant match!

Lady Dorothea Rowlandson has always known her duty: secure an advantageous marriage and safeguard her family’s future. With her father’s untimely death delaying her debut, she is now perilously close to spinsterhood. This season, she cannot afford distractions—especially not from a man as wholly unsuitable as Miles Shaw.

Miles, a charming but land-poor gentleman, has no illusions about love. He needs a wealthy bride to save his estate, and he’s honest about it. He may not be a titled peer, but he is determined to be a devoted husband, offering loyalty, affection, and security in return.

But when fate—perhaps with a touch of mischief—partners Dorothea and Miles for the first dance of the season, an undeniable spark ignites. He is not the match she planned. She is not the wealthy bride he sought. And yet, with every stolen glance and unguarded moment, resisting the impossible feels more and more like a fool’s errand.

In a world where fortunes dictate fate, will they defy society’s expectations… or their own?

Debrett’s peerage, anyone?

Normally I enjoy this author but that heroine would have had a copy of Debrett’s peerage and would have been consulting it constantly. She was also thoroughly dull and I get the pride (his) and prejudice (hers) themes but they were both so thoroughly uninteresting as people that I didn’t finish - very rare for me! This isn’t a review of the author who is generally very good - just this book!

I really enjoyed this book, the characters were well written and the story was engaging and easy to read. I’m looking forward to the next in the series!

Sweet, clean Regency romance.

A slow-burn Regency romance that is clean and sweet. Two people, both needing to make an advantageous marriage, find them selves irrevocably attracted to each other no matter that each can only give love without riches of a monetary kind.

Engrossing romantic tale that swept me into the world of Regency England

Another priceless gem from Jennie Goutet, this is an engrossing tale that swept me into the world of Regency England with characters who felt so real, I could almost reach out and touch them. There is such an air of authenticity to this novel - this is surely how it would feel to try to try to find your way in society in 1805 when you know almost nobody - and the way the characters behave and how their story develops seem completely natural.Lady Dorothea Rowlandson feels responsible for her younger siblings and timid mother and believes that their future happiness depends on her making a brilliant match. But how can she know who to choose when she has nobody to advise her? Meanwhile, the very charming Mr Miles Shaw is weighed down by responsibilities and desperately short of funds but he is uncomfortable with the idea of marrying for money. There’s a spark of attraction from their first meeting but of course the impoverished and untitled Mr Shaw is hardly the brilliant match Dorothea is looking for – or is he?In her acknowledgments, the author says “This book was a toddler who sat down on the sidewalk, folded his arms, and refused to budge. I was ready to sit right down next to him and fold my own. Thank you to authors / editors Jolene Perry, Jess Heileman, Jacque Stevens, and Arlem Hawks for picking us both back up again so that Miles and Dorothea’s story could be told.”I am so very glad they did! I can’t wait to read the next story in the series.

clean romance

I enjoyed this story very much, but to be honest it took a bit to fully grab me. I had to get to “know” the characters and then I was invested.A strong story plot with characters that kept me interested in their story. Both the hero and heroine were considered “unsuitable “ by society. One by lack of title and wealth. The other without connections and knowledge of society. Where they both lacked, they had what the other needed. One had charm and knowledge of social expectations and the other had wealth and title. While their paths crossed and sparks fly there seems to be a big difference and divide that is between them that keeps them apart.I loved the self discovery and growth the characters had and how they changed for the better.I look forward to seeing the remaining family members find their own happiness in future books.
