Andrew Backus was never supposed to be an heir. But with the possibility of a fine inheritance looming, every Society matron is throwing her daughters at him in hopes to catch the careless dandy. Unfortunately for them all, Andrew will not be caught and dragged into the responsibilities of matrimony.

The youngest of nine children, Isabella Todd longs for a match that would finally make her parents and Society take notice of her. When she crosses paths with Mr. Backus, she realizes a marriage to him could give her the desired recognition and she hatches a plot to snare the heir before he suspects.

Acting the part of friend, Isabella unintentionally falls for the fun-loving Andrew rather than his expected fortune. When he uncovers her plot just before Christmas, Andrew must decide if he can believe the truth of her love before her parents call her to London for their own schemes.

Short and sweet

A fun regency tale about a woman who sets out to win a man's heart, only to fall just as far. I might have liked the brother best, though. He gave excellent advice. And the story was light and fun.

Cute, fun, easy-to-read short regency novel

Predictably, the two main characters develop a friendship which turns into more, but they have to have a stumbling block before a happily ever after. Andrew Backus is running from love and all it’s entanglements, and Isabella Todd happily runs interference with those who are chasing him. Love comes, surprising them both. I loved their witty and easy interactions with each other.

Sweet but lightly spicy

Of all the fairy tales I've ever read, the tale of the Gingerbread Man would probably have been my guess for the least likely to successfully inspire a Regency romance. And yet, somehow the author managed to make it absolutely charming.A sweet (pun fully intended) light story, a quick read that will have you smiling throughout, even with brief moments of genuine pain. And now I need to go do some baking.

I expected more Charm

The romance between the two main characters is delightful, but the bullies ruined the story for me.I've read dozens of Regency romances, and the character of an overbearing older woman is common to many of them. They're bullies and control freaks who have zero concern for the people they are able to control, not even when it's family that they ought to care about. This is a character profile that I'm heartily sick of. I think Regency authors need to be more creative with their older women, and allow them to be human beings even if they are difficult personalities. A tender moment here and there would be refreshing. And Miss Thresher... what can I say. She's too much. Too blatant, too vicious, too desperate, and utterly unlikable. She reminds me of Nellie in the Little House books: Nellie never did have any redeeming qualities. The Gingerbread theme was charming, but I think the villains in this story could have been obstructive without being so very despicable.
