A mistaken kiss. A forced engagement. Can it become something more?

Lily Kingsley is destined for spinsterhood, but she refuses to accept that fate without receiving her first kiss. Luckily, she knows the perfect gentleman to enlist. Unluckily, she mistakes him for another and ends up in the arms of an overbearing and exceptionally frustrating merchant. And her troubles compound when busybodies catch them in their illicit embrace.

An engagement is the only solution, but Lily doesn’t want a fiancé who’s only doing his duty. Especially one who manipulates her into accepting it for the time being. Somehow she must make him see how ill-suited they are.

But why is the fellow so determined to see their engagement through?

Jack Hatcher hates surprises, but when a beguiling lady mistakes him for someone else and launches herself into his arms, he discovers not all surprises are bad. Marriage was not in Jack’s plans, but Lily stirs something inside him he never expected to feel.

But with his fiancé desperate to break with him and a new enemy wooing Lily away, Jack discovers that force of will won’t keep her by his side. Can he find a way to win her heart before it’s lost forever?

Interesting. Moving.

I enjoyed this book: the characters were especially well portrayed and a great deal of the storyline rested on them, how the trauma and abuse if their past reflected in their behaviour and attitudes of the present. It was a touching story.

Well-written story

It seems Jack is emotionally stunted, but his past life has trained him to keep his thoughts and feelings to himself, which can handicap a man in his attempts at wooing. He's in luck with Lily. This is a quiet story, but not overloaded with rambling thoughts of the characters. Very good read.

A stolen kiss

This book was rather refreshing in that the characters were not in bed by the last chapter! I think more than one gal who would not be considered the "belle-of-the-ball" nor "beauty queen" (myself included) could relate with Lily. Her beauty shines from within and is recognized by her mistaken identity Jack. I would recommend this book.

A stolen day

I started reading this after breakfast, and kept coming back to it all day until I finally finished it just before tea (the evening meal in our family). It is warm and human and full of complex rounded characters and attractive protagonists with real flaws they struggle to overcome. It is not concerned with the nobility, rather the middle class, more and less wealthy, and also talks about charity for the poor individually and in larger projects. I thoroughly recommend this book to all romance lovers.

Very good

4.5 .. have rounded down as I found all too frequent bouts of heroine ‘s extreme insecurity and inferiority laden negativity.. slightly repulsive a few times..especially as it was a kick in the teeth of all the love, support and kindness ALL her family, including the most shallow of her aunts and uncles, showed her..As is usual with this author’s characters.. both H/h have their demons to chase - deep seated insecurity and feelings of inferiority for h and tendency to indifference/ repression, lack of articulation for the H.. knowing hero’s childhood his behaviour was more understandable as compared to the heroine’s .. that she chose to let random strangers’ attitude almost always overshadow her family’s unstinting support was sometimes too disappointing and this behaviour also always led her to stop thinking rationally.. frankly someone may offer marriage out of duty or obligation .. but who forces marriage out of it or who arranges concerts out of duty or who spends their time and effort to ensure that your charity efforts succeed? Well our insecurity laden heroine does :) .. while the author has very nicely tried to explain away her behaviour.. could not really appreciate it completely...Still how H/h navigate the troubled waters of their courtship, which are ruffled some more by the completely malicious and unjustified interference of man with a supposed grouse with the hero, is very nicely told!!Despite the annoying heroine liked the story a lot .. recommended 👍 Ms Nichols back to her previous form.. ( though not to her shameless flirt standards:))
