Isabel Reed has promised to marry for love. At present her heart belongs to the one companion she knows accepts all her eccentricities—her horse. So when her older brother threatens to trade the animal on a whim, Isabel must force aside her progressive beliefs and bargain to entertain her brother's flirtatious, albeit handsome, friend Lucas Lincroft in exchange for keeping her horse.

Lucas is on the brink of madness—after a year’s worth of visits, he loves Isabel and is ready to propose. When it seems like she has finally come to feel the same, he foolishly believes he's won her heart.

After a botched proposal from Lucas, Isabel makes it her mission to prove his affections for her are misplaced. But Lucas is determined not to give up his pursuit, and as Isabel comes to know him and his heart, she must work to save herself from losing not only her horse, but the most equal love match she never thought possible.

A New Favorite Book

This is the next installment in the Promise of Forever After Series, and quite possibly my favorite yet! After reading Lakeshire Park I knew that Megan was an author to watch.
I devoured this novella. I related more to Isabel than I ever have to any other regency character; I truly felt that we were of one mind about so many things. I loved Isabel’s progressive ideals and fierce independence. Lucas, with his compassionate spirit and intelligent nature also drew me in.
This story touched my heart because I share so many hopes and fears with Isabel, not only regarding love, but the world as a whole.
As much as I love regency romance, I have always been a little disappointed to not see my own fierce character and ideals of equality reflected in such a different time period. I find that this was just the progressive regency love story I was looking for it.

Another little gem of a story!

Her Unexpected Courtship is another little gem of a story in the Promise of Forever After novella collection, able to be read as a standalone, but with the calibre of these romantic tales, why would you?

Megan Walker has created a delightful couple in Isabel and Lucas, with Lucas so desperately in love he blurts out a hasty marriage proposal to the bewildered Isabel, who hasn’t given her brother’s friend a moment of romantic notice.

Isabel’s determination to prove to Lucas they are not a match leads to many a tender moment as her eyes are slowly opened to his devotion and acceptance of her rather bold and forward thinking ways. Walker is an engaging storyteller and uses the trope and her characters to best advantage, resulting in a witty and entrancing romance you won’t want to miss.

Best of series!

Best one of the series so far for me. I loved Lucas and Isabel. Such great chemistry together! I loved Isabel’s passion for life and her forward ideas. And to see Lucas accept her as she was, as an equal was just really sweet. Who knew mucking out stalls could be romantic.
Rating: G, clean, sweet, fun

Isabel and Lucas

If Isabel hadn't fallen head over heals from Fred, I would have done it for her. Such a good guy!

Can I give this six stars? ;)

I love, love, loved this author’s first full novel, so I’ve been looking forward to more from her, and this novella did not disappoint. I hope another full novel is in the near future. I found the plot line and perspective of this story felt fresh and not well-worn. Don’t get me wrong, as a Regency lover I am pretty okay with reading variations on a theme, but it is always fun to feel like an author has given the readers something new. It seems much more common for the heroine to be the one who suffers with unrequited love while the hero has to get a clue. I like seeing it from the other side. I also always appreciate seeing little glimpses of attention to historical detail and this was probably the clearest accuracy I have seen paid to shuttlecock and battledore...usually authors seem to just assume it worked just Iike it’s descendant, badminton. Once again in this series of novellas, I finished feeling satisfied and not cut off, which is often how novellas leave me feeling. I highly recommend this series. Some of the best Regency authors of today.
