Preston Blake had it all—wealth, a picturesque estate, and a growing affection with his childhood best friend Caroline Avery—until an unfortunate accident leaves him badly scarred in more ways than one. Isolated by the cruel eyes of society, Preston’s only wish is to find where he now belongs.

Caroline Avery is recently out in society, and thanks to Preston Blake’s broken promises, finds herself being chased by a determined earl instead of courted by her best friend.

When, after a year’s absence, Preston finally accepts an invitation to visit her family’s estate, Caroline is determined to feign indifference to his company. But being back together proves more challenging than either friend conceived. Caroline longs to return to the past, but Preston cannot let go of his fears. How could they possibly have a future together?

Sweet, Clean Regency Novella

How neat to do a retelling of The Ugly Duckling! I have never read a story like that before. This story really detailed the pain someone can go through after dealing with a disfiguring tragedy - the PTSD that can come from it, and unfortunately, the cruelty of others. I loved Charlotte's constancy and loyalty throughout the whole story. Such a sweet novella.

Caroline and Preston

What a lovely sweet book!
I felt so sorry for Preston, he was so worried about what people would think and so many were mean to him.
I love how Caroline still looked at him as her love and the scars didn’t change that.
Preston’s declaration, swoon!

I enjoyed this story

I liked the story from the start and I was happily entertained all the way through the story.
I liked the way it ended.

Can Judgement Outweigh Love?

“A Beautiful Love” by Megan Walker is the fourth book in the series of “Forever After.”

Preston’s disfigurement is what’s keeping him from going anywhere publicly and choosing to marry the lady he once loved.

Can his lady’s love and kindness, change his heart and make him keep his promise?

This book is an interesting take. Not one of my favorites but, still great writing.

Sweet Ugly Duckling Novella

A Beautiful Love by @authormeganwalker

Review: 4 stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“I was such a fool,” he said. “To think that I could live without you.” Caroline leaned into his embrace. “You were not a fool. Only blind, my love. But look at you now.”

This novella is an Ugly Duckling retelling, which I don’t ever remember reading a retelling of this fairytale before. It is part of the Forever After Retellings series but is a standalone novella.

This childhood friends to more story is so sweet!

Preston is gentle and caring. He is physically and emotionally scarred. His insecurities and feeling that Caroline deserves more than him were heartbreaking. I loved how he willing helped Caroline and stepped out of his comfort zone for her. He tried to fight his feelings so hard. I loved the healing he found in Caroline’s acceptance of him. Caroline is intelligent, sunny, and determined. She battles to hide her feelings and the hurt of broken promises. I loved her absolute acceptance of Preston. She never shied away or pitied him. I loved how she went to him when she needed help and her determination to get him to fulfill a long ago promise. Their honest conversations were delightful and the ball amazing. What a sweet happily ever after!

A few more quotes:
“I truly want your friendship, Caroline. I hate knowing you are angry with me. And I can’t bear knowing that I’ve hurt you.” “I want that, too. Truly, I hate that you’ve suffered so much on your own, Preston. But I shall try to understand your decisions.” She stared seriously into his gaze. “For now, no more making promises you cannot keep. If we are to be friends, I want the honesty of our childhood back.”

“I will not ever enjoy stares or whispers on my behalf. But being with you. The happiness I feel with you beside me, no matter what else stands around me . . . I can breathe again. I feel more like myself with you than anywhere else in the world.”
