Anything is possible with a spying debutante, a duke, and a conspiracy.

Miss Rosamund Smythe is finding the Marriage Mart a dead bore. She’d much rather continue working for her father as a spy than endure another minute of the Season. But things take an interesting turn when she overhears details of a plot against her childhood friend and first love. A family feud drove them apart years ago, but he still holds a special place in her heart, and she won’t let anyone hurt him—not now, not ever.

Alexander Milton, the new Duke of Wrentham, has always longed for a simple life. His tumultuous childhood taught him to appreciate peace and quiet above all else. Rose is the antithesis of everything he wants in a proper wife, but her beauty, intelligence, and loyalty call to him. And spending time with her to unravel the plot against him makes him wonder if the simple life he craves might be entirely overrated. Maybe he really does need a little adventure in his life.

But it soon becomes clear that a nefarious conspiracy is afoot—one that puts not only Alex’s freedom in danger, but Rose’s life. Can they overcome all that stands between them? Or will their second chance at love be snuffed out before it can even truly begin?

Enemies to lovers and political intrigue.

A clean story. I liked it. However, I did have some grouses. Mainly it was around the ending. We spent a lot of time wondering (too long?) in the story why the baddy is trying to manipulate people and what he is after. We also learn is very dangerous. Rosie’s father says he has measures in place yet she is easily abducted from a ball. Everyone then is chasing the evil Broderick, after his blood, but we hear nothing of how he is captured, which is a shame. Given everyone knows he is devious and up to no good why was he still free to move around and attend so many events. We also do not know if there are any repercussions for Rosie following her abduction. Okay, she is immediately going to marry a Duke but be nice to know if there are rumours. And lastly what happens to Lady Elizabeth. Lady Ann etc. be nice to see their reactions to Rosie’s engagement, or do we learn more in the next books in this series. If so it is not immediately clear in the version I read.

Worth the read……

Thoroughly enjoyed this light story from Regency England. The intrigue woven through it added a sense of excitement. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.

08/15 Geschichte ohne Spannungsbogen

This is regency romance with a flair for suspense and subterfuge. To be sure all the London society ton Are in evidence but the storyline is so much more. Great company during my stay home to stay safe sojourn.

Great plot, interesting characters but I can do with a better ending

I was surprised to have fallen in love with the characters in this book. Flawed but charming and realistic. Loved the intrigues and can't wait to read more
