A grumpy gentleman, a meddling miss, and a battle of wits neither intends to lose…

Philippa Clavering has a knack for matchmaking—whether others appreciate it or not. When she realizes her dear friend is being courted by entirely the wrong gentleman, she takes it upon herself to set things right. Her schemes, however, attract the watchful eye (and sharp tongue) of Susan’s older brother, the exasperatingly sensible Jack Blythefield.

Jack has finally decided it’s time to marry—preferably a quiet, obedient wife who won’t upend his orderly life. What he doesn’t need is Philippa, with her whirlwind plans and knack for entangling him in the most inconvenient situations.

But when scandal threatens his family, Philippa is the only one who can help. As her own persistent suitor grows bolder, Jack must ask himself: does he truly want a docile wife… or the one woman who drives him mad in the best possible way?

A great read

Plenty of research helped create a very believable romantic setting amongst a political background... and yes I know that it’s not a purist account of the Corn Laws but this is after all a romance ! A very enjoyable read ..

Great

Enjoyed reading the book. Much more content and depth compared to first book.Would have liked the answers of all questions asked by Jack in the end. Like these series. I hope there are more books in this series. Looking forward to reading them.

The H&H are amusingly incompatible: he so formal and totally absorbed by his career, she, a seemingly fluffy little blonde who has more gumption and savvy than her 19 summers would warrant. The tortuous path of their interactions, between balls and tedious political entertainments centered on the Corn Laws, livened by booby traps sprung by a quirky gallery of supporting characters, make for a mostly appreciable read.

Great entertainment

Jack and Phillipa's story has been truly entertaining. I must say I often found myself laughing out loud due to the humorous jabs. Great read!

Entertaining and educational.

Book 2 in the Clavering Chronicles, this was a lovely read with characters that were well rounded, believable and entertaining with an extended cast of supporting characters.Much of this book delves into the political world but I found this was woven through the story well and interspersed with balls, soirées and get togethers to the point it wasn’t overwhelming the romance and friendships. A lovely read to follow Book 1.
