A fighter pilot with regrets, a humanitarian worker with a mission, and a second chance to work through everything that keeps them apart. Dex Callison, otherwise known as Ace makes a split second decision to parachute into a hostile situation to make a lot of things in his life right. His life as a Senator's son, a JAG Air Force pilot and then an active duty soldier have not yet filled the loss of his best friend, the only woman he has ever loved, Gianna West. Gianna West thought that she and Dex were made for each other forever. He'd promised to finish his active duty and then join her building orphanages all over the world in remote villages. But she learned in one instant, how much more Dex wanted to start his own military training program, much more than he wanted to be with her. Alone, serving people she falls in love with, she tries to tell herself she doesn't miss him. All of that goes out the window when he shows up in her village on a remote island. When you travel to a different country every six months, there’s little time for relationships. Every pilot joins Top Flight for different reasons, but no one expects to fall in love.

A clean romantic suspense

This is the first book in a new series called Top Flight, a civilian company formed to hone the jet fighter pilot skills for other countries. Dex, a former Air Force military pilot, and others are in the Pacific for their latest job. The team receives an SOS call from an American woman on the island of Panau requesting humanitarian aid for a village where she has an orphanage. She has spent much time working with the locals to create self-sustaining food and water sources. Dex discovers that the American woman is Gianna, his closest friend. Because of differing agendas, Dex and Gianna have drifted apart and moved on.The island of Panau has become a military and political quagmire. As Dex and Gianna try to find common ground, a crisis catapults them into the middle of a hostile coup that puts the local villagers in danger. This book is well-written and fast paced. The backstory fills in several details that helps the reader connect with the characters. There is one gaping exception though. Where did Top Flight get their jets? Maybe it is just me but the omission of that detail bugged me enough to drop this novel to 4 stars.

Great chemistry, exciting premise.

I have really enjoyed other contemporary novels by Sophia Summers and was super excited for this new series, however; it didn't quite grab me and pull me into the story as much as I had expected. I felt like Dex was very well-developed as a character. When it came to Gianna and his career, I think he did a better job of looking at the situation as a whole and thinking things through before acting or over reacting. He seemed sincere and I felt like I was able to understand his emotions. On the other hand, I just didn't love Gianna's character as much as I wanted to. She seemed too reckless and kind of shallow in her development. There were many moments between the two that the chemistry was just jumping off the pages and I would say the moments when the two were communicating or working together were definitely the strong point of the story. I loved their history and how they could read each other so well. When the two were simply “being” in each other's presence, those were the moments I couldn't put the book down.Overall, the story had a very fast pace with some parts that just felt a little jumpy in spots and for the intensity of the crisis in the story, Gianna just didn't seem to act with the sense I would have expected based on her character's background. The romance is sweet and clean with great kissing scenes keeping it clean on the page. I am excited for the other books since this story does bring intrigue into their stories.

Finding Compromise

I thoroughly enjoyed Ace. Dex and Gianna were marvelous characters. Genuine, likeable, driven and passionate. Their end goal, making the world a better place, is the same. How they go about it could not be more opposite. Best friends since childhood, their adult selves are keeping them apart. They have yet to find a compromise on how to blend lives and goals. It takes getting caught in the middle of an international incident to finally make them see what's important...each other.
