A childhood friendship. A simmering attraction. An impossible love.

Honoria Bassett has always prided herself on competence. A well-run home, a gracious hostess, and a carefully curated future—those are the things that matter. And she certainly knows what kind of husband would best suit her. Philip Townsend, her charming but exasperating neighbor, does not qualify. His estate is in need of attention, his priorities are all wrong, and worst of all, her father would never approve.

Philip has more pressing concerns than marriage. With his family estate struggling, he has little time to worry about finding a wife—no matter how often Honoria’s sharp wit and undeniable beauty steal his focus.

But when unforeseen troubles draw them together, the easy familiarity of childhood shifts into something far more complicated. Friendship turns to something deeper, something neither of them dares to name. And when a long-standing family feud threatens to keep them apart, they must decide if love is worth defying the past.

Not up to expectations

Had expected much from the author. The plot and characters felt insipid. Plot just slogged through without anything interesting happening anywhere.

Lovely

Lovely book, very peaceful. Jennie is a talented writer, with believable characters. Can't wait for the next one in 2023!

Engaging characters

I liked that this story was set in Lincolnshire, far away from the London scene. I did like the characters of Honoria and Philip. Honoria was a very capable and caring woman who thought she was in love with her friend’s handsome brother. Philip was an honourable and caring gentleman, who lived in the neighbouring estate. A number of events lead to Philip and Honoria viewing each other in a different light. However, circumstances are against them and none more than Honoria’s father! Also, Honoria has long had feelings for another handsome gentleman. This was a gentle romance that moved along at a gradual pace. The attitude of some of the men towards the capability of women must have been very frustrating for an intelligent woman like Honoria. There were some very interesting secondary characters and I hope they get their stories as well.

Authentic, humorous, romantic and clean.

Once again, Jenny Goutet delivers a wonderfully authentic story, filled with charm, humour, likeable characters, lovely settings, and just possibly a person or two of suspect intentionsA wonderful start to the Daughters of the Gentry series.

I enjoyed every word of this sweet story. The plot is credible, the characters well drawn, and the writing smooth and elegant.
