She’s overlooked in daylight. He hides in shadows. And still—somehow—they find each other. Lady Helen Hargreaves has spent her life tucked into the corners—of ballrooms, of conversations, of expectations. But when she flees a crowded assembly and stumbles into a stranger’s secluded refuge, the spark between them feels anything but quiet. Especially when that stranger turns out to be the Duke of Kensington.

He attends out of obligation. She speaks without pretense. And for once, everything feels real. Alexander Astor loathes the performance of courtship. But Helen, with her quick wit and unguarded grace, sees straight through the charade. Their connection is instant. True. Terrifying. Because love, it turns out, requires not just heart—but voice. And that’s where fear threatens to step in.

With a misunderstanding looming and family loyalties entwined, they must find the courage to reach for what could be theirs. Luckily, Helen’s bond with her younger sister reminds her: love doesn’t thrive in silence. And sometimes, a quiet girl must be bold. Because the right match doesn’t always arrive in perfection—it arrives in persistence, honesty, and a touch of unexpected magic.

He never wanted a bride. She never expected a duke. But this story? It just might be the beginning of something extraordinary.

📚 If you’ve ever hidden in the margins—and hoped someone might read between the lines and find you there… this story is yours.

This is a prequel to the USA TODAY bestselling and award-winning "Love's Second Chance Series".

About the Author

Hi, I’m Bree Wolf—a USA Today bestselling author, former academic, and life-long lover of stories. I studied English and Specialized Translation, wandered the halls of universities, spending more years than I should have trying to be reasonable.Eventually, that quiet, persistent voice in my head said: It’s time to write.I’ve since published over fifty historical romances, each one stitched together from pieces of my own heart: doubts, regrets, fears, and messy, hopeful dreams. I love chocolate (especially when chapters get emotional), cry far too easily at my keyboard, and have a deep spiritual bond with cats… which is tragically one-sided, as I’m terribly allergic. A lifelong heartbreak, truly.

Good story

Loved the plotline about the bookish plain girl. It also spoke of strong family relationships. There is always another half for all.

What does a man really want in a wife? Is he swayed by beauty, a quick wit or an intelligent mind...

Meet Lady Helen, eldest daughter of the Earl of Hargreaves. Where she goes, even to a ball, she carries a book to stave off the boredom. These two meet but confusion and misunderstandings prevail. Will either of them find happiness on their own, or will it take the combined efforts of a rake and Lady Helen's younger sister to untangle the chaos? Read this book twice and it still makes me sigh. Enjoy!

Fun, Light Read

This was a quick, fun read! Not a lot of time for in-depth character building, but I still felt connected and enjoyed the light romp to a romantic happily ever after.

Family

When sisters are close, nothing can separate them. Even a misunderstanding when names aren’t mentioned. This is a great story.

Regency romance

Helen, the bookworm, accidentally comes across another bookworm (Duke) at a ball where they are both avoiding mingling. However, through a mix-up because they weren't properly introduced, he mistakened her name for her sisters when he comes calling which causes some hurt feelings until resolved. A sweet and clean novella with a lovely cover and much sisterly love, but short with a simple plot for those who enjoy this genre and/or beginning of a series.
