She lost herself to survive. He found her when he wasn’t even looking. Lady Charlotte has been called many things—victim, villain, broken. In truth, she carries pieces of each and wears none of them proudly. After years of cruelty and choices no soul should be forced to make, she believes her heart beyond repair. So she lives quietly. No hope. No expectations. Just endurance.

He married her to defy his father. He stayed to make a promise. Sebastian Campbell intended his proposal as rebellion—a calculated strike against the father whose control has cast shadows over his life. Charlotte was meant to be a symbol. A name. A quiet match that made noise. But from the moment he sees her, wounded but upright, something shifts. What began in defiance becomes something deeper.

Their arrangement may have begun as rebellion, but it evolves into something far more profound. Charlotte fears the cage of marriage, but Sebastian offers not restraint, only refuge. And slowly, when he begins to see not what she endured but who she’s becoming, Charlotte starts to see herself through gentler eyes—those of a man who chooses her for who she is, not what she survived.

She thought she was too far gone. He never stopped believing in her return.

🕯️ If you’ve ever doubted your capacity to heal—and longed for someone who sees your pain and stays anyway… this story is yours.

NOTE: Each love story in this series can be read as a stand-alone. However, most readers prefer to read them in order.

USA Today bestseller

About the Author

Hi, I’m Bree Wolf—a USA Today bestselling author, former academic, and life-long lover of stories. I studied English and Specialized Translation, wandered the halls of universities, spending more years than I should have trying to be reasonable.Eventually, that quiet, persistent voice in my head said: It’s time to write.I’ve since published over fifty historical romances, each one stitched together from pieces of my own heart: doubts, regrets, fears, and messy, hopeful dreams. I love chocolate (especially when chapters get emotional), cry far too easily at my keyboard, and have a deep spiritual bond with cats… which is tragically one-sided, as I’m terribly allergic. A lifelong heartbreak, truly.

Engrossing well written book

I really liked how this book developed and Charlotte's secret pst life unfolded. It was part thriller and part love story. I think that this was Bree's best book that I have written.

A very different kind of regency romance

It is a very different type of Regency Romance because the heroine is a very grey character. The hero seems immature at point; but grows as the story progresses. What I loved the most is the in depth portrayal of the mental trauma the heroine had gone through. This is a book 5 of a series; and though is a good stand alone book as well, you will have the urge to go and read the other book which involves the heroine and one of her very important time of her life. The ending is ambiguous; leaving a chance for the villain to return and I felt that the story of the hero's sister is somewhat very sad.

Good book in a good series

I really liked this story. It was full of twists and turns, the main characters seemed to stay true to their personalities and Bree Wolf experimented with such controversial topics like physical abuse and threats to mental well-being. It took a while to warm to Charlotte, but as the story developed, so too did my sympathy for her. I must say, I was saddened by the death of a potential main character early in the book, because I would have liked to see him develop his own story. A good read.

Fantastic

I loved the characters and the plot in this. Hard to put down once you’re part way through despite a slow start. I thought I knew how it ended but there was a twist midway through that changed my mind... I was still right with some parts but there was a gap that I didn’t guess. Rae past the first 1/4 and you’ll love it

Boring & pointless

It was all too much to be realistic. I got tired of the heroine's trust issues. She was always on the brink of letting them go but inevitably drew back at the last minute. The husband tried too hard and never quite succeeded. The entire book was a constant tug of war that soon grew boring and went nowhere except irking my patience and losing my interest.
