Maddie:

How did I become a washed-up lawyer at the ripe age of twenty-six? I’ll tell you.

Connor Freaking Quinn. AKA, the devil himself.

When he shows up at my new job to apologize, I’d just as soon torture him than talk to him. It’s entertaining, but it doesn’t change the past. And that’s what I’ve been trying to do for the last four months. I have to get back into law.

The problem is, the longer I’m away from the courtroom, I can’t help but realize I prefer a much different court.

Connor:

The reason for our feud?

It’s simple, really. I need a distraction, and fighting with Maddie is the perfect way to keep my mind off the stress from the last couple years. Messed up, I know.

I’ll admit, I took it too far. I didn’t mean to start that rumor, but I ruined her life anyway. I have to fix things for her.

If only she will talk to me. I miss her cute glares and snide remarks—maybe I should consider therapy.

The guilt isn’t the only thing keeping me around, though. And the longer I try to get her to talk to me, the harder it is to stay away.

Not On Your Life is an enemies to lovers, closed door romcom. It can be read as a stand alone. Trigger warning: betrayal, and body image issues.

My Review

Another great story by author, Janessa Fayeth! I laughed out loud a lot! The tense relationship, the teasing, the fighting, the awareness....the emotion, the side characters (mommy dearest and a reappearance of Cruz) are equally charming. I like how Fayeth brings attention to volunteering and food disorders to name a few. I love how her characters tell a story while making a change in society by helping others.

Excellent

Connor and Maddie are enemies. He got her fired from her dream job as a lawyer. She’s never going to forgive or forget. This is an excellent enemies to lovers romcom which has fantastic banter. There are some hurts to uncover and preconceptions to erase and it’s all done brilliantly. This is an excellent series and I’m hoping for a lot more from this author!

Loved it!

Not On Your Life was such a fun book!! At the beginning, I was just as angry as Maddie, but then Conner grew on me. He's such a flirt but in the sweetest way since it was always aimed at Maddie and not his default setting with everyone. Maddie's mom was an absolute hoot, and I loved how Conner played right into her hands, because everything she wanted was what he wanted to. Loved it!

Well written but a frustrating relationship which is likely a tragedy

First let me get the good parts out of the way. The book is well written. The protagonists, Maddie and Conner have very engaging banter. However, the book is incredibly frustrating. One of the main themes in the book is that as a lawyer, after losing her job Maddie can only apply to a law firm. The only alternative is apparently working as a personal trainer or as a coach. This was frustrating as there are whole lot of options apart from working for a law firm that as a lawyer she could have opted for that Maddie never explores. The book suggests Maddie was not cut out to be a lawyer because she had a fear of crowds. Not all lawyers do trial law. It's possible to be a very successful lawyer without being good in crowds. Also, it appeared she had strategies for it in school, and we are led to believe they wouldn't work in college.Ultimately this book is about a girl who is unwilling to advocate for herself.Maddie's mother is horrible, Her single minded determination to marry Maddie off is supposed to be comic relief but adds to the picture of a character unwilling to advocate for herself. It also underlines how little moral and financial support Maddie has.Conner is a terrible partner. He feels guilty about driving Maddie out, but he doesn't do anything about it. He was the one assaulted. He could have claimed it was a misunderstanding and that he was never assaulted. He didn't. This was because of his financial situation, but he put himself before her.So, he decides to make it up. How? He does very little making up really. He never truly apologizes. He forces her into a situation in public to get her to back down, that given his knowledge of her fear of public speaking is an absolutely jerk move.He pushes her into a coaching position becaus ehe has determined that a woman who beat him in every exam and every position in law school is not cut out to be a lawyer. Yet, from the description in the book, she isn't all that great as a coach, but was apparently a brilliant lawyer. The point here is that this narrative makes him feel good about his actions but was ultimately not his decision to take.He forgets all about her when he gets busy with work and is at her sister's party, to which he forgets to invite her. Huh? If he is so in love, would he have done that?I was so disappointed when Maddie chooses him. She chooses a mediocre lawyer, who ruined her life through jealousy, doesn't put her first and manipulates her out of a career. It feels the making of a tragedy. But given how engaging the characters are, it makes an instructive reading into how we can be fooled into relationships and life choices like this.
