Sweet, family tale

Annette is a widow with 2 teenage children living in Hawaii after recovering from the crash that killed her husband 2 years earlier. She is called to the school after her son Adam gets into a fight defending a boy in a fight.Mike is a widow with an autistic son Brian who moved to Hawaii in the hopes that a smaller community would allow him to flourish. Brian is intelligent and happy but misses social cues and requires a strict routine. Adam sees a him as a shy boy who will do whatever the meaner kids tell him. After witnessing an incident he steps in and ends up in a fight.Mike and Annette work together to stop the bullying before it takes hold and get the kids working together. As they spend time together they realise that they have feelings for each other. This is a very sweet story about support, community and blended families. It's quite different from the last Aloha book I read which was full of humour and a sex scene. There's none of that here but it's a touching story of love the second time around.I would have liked a bit more of the children's personalities to have been shown. As they were the crux of the book, I wish we could have gotten to know them. All we're told about Brian is that he has autism and likes sports for the stats. Did he like Annette? They never spoke to each other and Mike never spoke to her children. I would have liked a scene where they bonded with the other parent. But that's the only fault I could find with it, which is personal preference, so I give it 4 stars.

Good read

Loved the way 2 people... Almost lonely came together and held each other strong... and happily ever after. Engrossing tale!

sweet, worthy and well-meaning

This was sweet and very worthy, well-meaning and clean, but I found the story telling a little clunky. The inclusion of a central character on the autism spectrum was interesting but I found the long infodumps about manifestations and care of young people with autistic tendencies were a bit intrusive, a bit 'tacked on' rather than integral to the story telling. And it was perhaps a bit too simplistically happy-ever-after given the difficulties involved. For example, I could not believe that young teen boys would accept with equanimity their mother turning up for lunch with them, especially as part of the solution to a bullying problem. I don't think sweet romance and autism are a comfortable mix in this book. A good try though.

Is a Relationship Possible?

Michael's wife had died of an aneurysm. Annette' s husband had been killed in a plane crash. Little did Annette know where life would lead her when she became a volunteer mom at her son's school. Defending an autistic boy and trying to steer a bully in the right direction became a real challenge. Meeting the autistic boy's father would put her life in a tail spin. Read this lovely story and discover the author's understanding of autism and the challenges it presents. Would a relationship between Michael and Annette be possible or would it even get of the ground?
