At nineteen, Lady Lydia Markham was beautiful, bookish and naïve. Her sheltered, loveless upbringing had not educated her in the ways of the beau monde, or the men who inhabited it. So when she met Nathaniel, Lord Fairmont, it was all too easy to be swept away by his rakish charm and good looks. She was devastated when he did not propose marriage, but joined Wellington’s army instead.

Six years of battle has changed Nathaniel: older, wiser, the conqueror of the addictions that drove his misspent youth, he’s avowed to start afresh. But a chance meeting with Lydia unnerves him; she is so very keen to speak to him, yet he cannot fathom why. Has she waited for him all these years? He is unfit for her and is focused on making amends for another’s life that he ruined, and he urges her to forget him.

Nathaniel’s indifference leaves Lydia heartbroken, but she reaffirms her vow to begin anew. Unfortunately, she needs Nathaniel's assistance. If ensuring his aid means following him to the Continent, where he’s gone to fight Napoleon with the Household Guards, then so be it. But will he help once he knows her secret?

One of Johns’ Very, Very Best

Not given to tears, I have to admit a a few ‘wet eye’ moments during this tale. always a good sign when it’s meant to happen! 😂Her military & battle research is very good. Without giving us gruesome, stomach-churning detail, she portrays the horror of the battle’s aftermath with aplomb. As for Nathaniel, he is a good example of how drugs & alcohol making a person surrender themselves to disgusting and despicable behaviour. That was quite well-written I thought, without edging into exoneration or mitigation. His redemption over the series has been particularly well authored. My only criticism is proof-Reading. Not the author’s fault, I’m sure, but she could do with a better proof reader. Over several books there have been multiple spelling mistakes; missing words; odd words that were clearly meant to be deleted; uncorrected grammatical errors....Regardless, I loved this book & highly recommend it. ❤️

not the best but get better at the end

I didn’t like this book for many reasons, but I finished it because I like to read a series till the end (if possible) and I tried. The story of Lydia and Amelia help to continue until the end.Like other recensions, I do not like to read books on rapist of 13-year-old child and sexual abuse. But I gave this book a try because of the series in general.I absolutely didn’t lie the audiobook of it. The speaker voice was so different from the previous books. The voice of the duke etc didn’t match with the previous books and this voice just didn't feel right for me for the roles in the book. I should have check first the audio before buying it. But in the next book it gehts better.Spoiler-Alert:1) I don’t think that someone who survived a rapist at this young age and within the family would reconcile with him and even enjoy big family celebration. Even after forgiveness, I can’t believe it.2) I wanted that revenge or at last justice against this uncle for his continued sexual assault of his ward. A duke could have done more to punish this man, but nothing came from it. I was really disappointed and couldn’t believe they would just let the man go without punishment. Updated coments: after reading book2 "melting the ice" in the next series of the elements, we get more explanation about this uncle and the punishment he recieved (exil from england).3) a child born out of wedlock is illegitimate and even after the parents married, it still be illegitimate (in this epoch): it was born 5 years before the marriage.4) I couldn’t believe that a brother would continue his friendship to a man who rape his sister (Andrew is the brother of Elinor. She was rape at age of 13 through Nathaniel. His excuse of drug etc, is no excuse for me to rape a child)
