Andrew Abbott was the last man standing; all of his friends had succumbed to leg shackles. Now that he had sold out from the army, he was unsure how he wanted to spend the rest of his life. His father proposed sending him back to restore their burned plantation in America, but just as he was set to leave, he met the woman of his dreams.

Gwendolyn Lambert's family was reduced to penury after her father was disgraced and killed in a duel. Gwen and her invalid mother survive on a mere pittance in the city of Bath. Her mother's cousin, the Dowager Duchess of Loring, is determined to see Gwendolyn taken care of and restored to her rightful place, but she does not have any use for society after her family was treated ill by them. But the savvy dowager has a few tricks up her sleeve, including her handsome and charming grandson. Unfortunately, she did not count on him being sent to America or Gwendolyn's father's family coming back into the picture.

The entire Loring-Abbott clan becomes involved in a scheme to bring Andrew and Gwendolyn together, but will they be able to overcome being separated by oceans, storms, and the interference of scheming mamas?

Excellent Regeny read--a story and series with depth

I quickly became addicted to this series of books by Elizabeth Johns. I gobbled up everything she'd written and was sorry to see this series end...but, it didn't really! She came out with a follow-up novella and then a new sister series incorporating the characters and events from this series. Wonderful! The plot was well developed, the characters genuine and intriguing, and the book well written. I eagerly devoured each page. I recommend it highly and anxiously anticipate each sequel in her new series about the Ashbury triplets!

A perfect ending to the Loring-Abbot series!

I simply adored this story. Elizabeth Johns once again writes a beautiful story of two people overcoming time, distance and insecurities to find a love to last a lifetime.Shadows of doubt is the final chapter in the Loring-Abbot and what a great way to end the series. I have fallen in love with this family and watching them overcome the adversity they each face to find not only wholeness within themselves but a love to last a lifetime. The story involves Andrew Abbott a former captain in the British army who is trying to find some purpose in his life. Andrew is a charmer and has enjoyed flirting with the ladies but has felt no need to marry until he meets his match in Gwendolyn.I simply adored Gwendolyn. She has no use to the ton or politics of British society, after her father scandalous death and cut from her family. Gwendolyn is a survivor & will fight to make a way for herself. As soon as Andrew meet Gwendolyn he finally found the women he didn't know he was looking for. Over the course of a week a real friendship develops as well as an attachment between the two. Unfortunately, Gwendolyn doesn't believe she is worthy of Andrew and believes he only wants her for her mistress. Andrew takes off to America, hopelessly in love with Gwendolyn but unsure if she returns his feelings.I loved watching Andrew's and Gwendolyn journey to forever as they dealt with distance, misunderstandings and scheming families.

It Picked Up Near The End...

BOOK 4#: Shadows of Doubt,{Andrew's Story}. This is is, I think, the end of the Loring Abbott Series... Boo-hoo! But I believe Elizabeth Johns is going to be writing a series about...(building the suspense)...THE ASHBURY TRIPLETS! It's called "The Ashbury Triplets Trilogy"(just thought you might want to know!) and the 1st book is going about Gavin {DR. CRAIG}!!! I don't know about you but every time I see that poor Scot I think,"That dude has got to find love!" And Margaux is the heroine! Anyway, I don't know when it is coming out( :( I'm sorry). So moving on to the book: Andrew, as always, was outstanding! But I wasn't crazy about Gwen...she was supposed to be a redhead, but she was ~incredibly~ boring, (I mean, c'mon, really?) And to me they "fell in love" a bit quick. But that might just be me. I think Andrew deserved ALOT better. On the other hand, I absolutely LOVED seeing a lot of the characters! Especially the FAIRMONTS! But unlike the other books in the series, this one dragged in a few parts, but the best part in the entire book was when they get "STRANDED"! Classic,(it made me bump up my rating)! But "SEEKING REDEMPTION" is still the best book in the series, though! This is a clean read. I guess you could read this as a stand-alone, but I TOTALLY recommend reading all the other books in the series,(especially BOOK 3)!!! If you don't you may get confused with all the characters. So just read them & you'll be like me and say,"Nice seeing all of y'all again!!!" See? 'Hope my review helped you!

Another great story from this author

Another great story from this author! Book 4 of this series is charming and sweet with a nice touch of excitement and suspense along the way. I really enjoy how the characters from all four books of this series appear in each book. It gives the reader a sense of engagement and a closer connection to the family and to their plights, and it increases the enjoyment in reading the entire series. This book has a very good mix of romance and humor, with a nice bit of excitement mixed in, that made it a very interesting and entertaining read. This book was also hard for me to put down. The action is steady and not boring in the least. There was always something going on to keep the reader engaged. It is a great read - a clean but passionate romance. Another well-written story from Elizabeth Johns! Highly recommended.
