We all need a true friend

I couldn’t finish this book, but not because it wasn’t really well written - it is. The problem is that it hit too close to home and stripped away some of the protection I had put around my heart so that I could be strong with what I am dealing with. I was crying and couldn’t read any more. This is a really well written book and it deals really well with hard topics and shows how much we hide from others. Because of it we become really isolated. Each of us needs a friend with whom we can open up to and be vulnerable with. Trudy and Lane were that for each other. This story certainly proved the adage that you shouldn’t judge without walking in another’s shoes.

Ending rushed

*******WARNING********* SOME SLIGHT SPOILERS BELOW

I felt the ending to the book was incomplete.

Gabe was the main catalyst driving the plot of the novel.
Readers also learn of a secret about his real reason as to why he wanted to hurt Trudy using Lane as his pawn.
This issue should not been written off with one simple sentence.
Lane being Gabe's "best friend"-- well, Lane needed to confront Gabe not with violence but why their relationship had changed.

In spite of that disappointment, I really am giving a 4.5 rating.

I found Lane and Trudy's issues extremely intense and they gave each other more than one would expect.

Especially Trudy's main issue is extremely upsetting.
Having Lane in her life regardless of his original intent helped her immensely.

Many beautiful scenes between Lane and Trudy--and how their lives are changed by having each other to lean on.

Sweet YA romance

The pangs of navigating high school came rushing back as I read this story. I could recall the smell, the feel of the cold metal lockers, the sense of isolation in a crowd, the camaraderie of others walking the same path, the doubts and fears, the pressure to succeed/ fit in/pass the test/conform. In this book, Lane and Trudy are each experiencing those feelings to some degree. A bet and the principal bring them together. Lane's struggle with self-worth and Trudy's isolation brought me to tears. The end, however, was typically teen: somewhat dramatic but rather simplistic. Loved it!

Heartwarming yet heartbreaking read

I really enjoyed this story, it made me laugh and then made me want to cry. The writing really brought out the feelings of the characters to a point where I started feeling the same. Wonderful read and I couldn’t put it down.
