Good

This was the first I’d read by the author and I will now search out more from her. Ronon was a great male lead. Smart, likeable and good. Satisfying wrap up to finish.

Brilliant

I loved this book. It's fairly fast paced and draws you in nicely. I think I have a new favourite book boyfriend. The world building is fab and the ending is very satisfying. Over all an excellent read.

Not my favorite Rallison book, but still good

Jeanette Rallison is an amazing, talented writer. I enjoyed the suspense in this book, as well as the creative take on wizardry. As usual, Jeanette delivered a tale that includes humor, heart, well written dialogue, and excitement. All that being said, it was not my favorite of her books. The beginning was gripping. However, it was a bit slow with very little dialogue from about the second chapter up through a little past the middle. I think because of this, I found it hard to connect to the characters. I also had a hard time believing the romance. It didn't feel like there was much relationship building.Fantasy with a bit of romance is usually my favorite genre, but up until the end, I had trouble getting through the story. Then, about four chapters before the end, it got really good, and I couldn't put it down. All in all, I'm glad I bought this book and read it. I don't think it's one I will go back to again and again, but I would read another if this becomes a series. I will also continue to read the books Rallison puts out. She's an excellent, engaging author.

The One Author I Can Count On

It's been so long since I read a really good fantasy/romantasy. It was once my favorite genre, but in the past several years I've all but given up and gone to other genres entirely, opting instead for less obnoxious more assuredly positive, enjoyable reads. It only takes a quick scroll through the latest MSWL calls from agents repping fantasy to see that unique, clean, brilliantly written fantasy has been in a total death spiral for ages now, replaced almost entirely with forced political messages, obvious representations of every modern ideology or situation currently being discussed (or argued), and blatant attempts to make a special interest "statement" in a semi-fantasy setting. Yawn. Gone are the days of creative sweeping settings, unique and lovely magic systems, original world building, sweet romance, and well written stories with lovely, brave, nuanced characters meant to take the reader to a different time and place where true courage and difficult lessons about right and wrong and good and evil are played out in a different world. I've been so disillusioned by YA and New Adult Fantasy/Romantasy and what agents and publishers are demanding and churning out for awhile now.But then Janette Rallison releases this wonderful gem. Knowing I've loved so many of her books, I bought it as soon as it was released, and then I read it in a day.I nearly cried several times while reading it just because I was so excited to finally love a story so much. It was exciting, sweet, funny, sad, and humbly contained all the reasons fantasy is so wonderful. I didn't want to leave the characters at the end, I loved them so much. I enjoyed the clean, sweet romance and the lack of any self-interested, heavy-handed political messaging. It was just a beautiful, captivating story that made me remember why I used to read and love fantasy in the first place. This book is a marvel. Clean but heart-stopping romance, intrigue, suspense, humor, wit, and an absolutely lovely ending. This one will have a permanent place on my bookshelf, and I'll be recommending it to everyone. Thank you, Janette, for writing and publishing such a wonderful story!
