"A fast moving, engaging tale in what promises to be an epic fantasy romance series," Kirkus Reviews.

The first time Chancery’s twin sister tried to kill her was on their ninth birthday. In the intervening years, nothing improved. In fact, Judica stabbed her hand with a fork just this morning so she could take the last pancake.

Then Judica threw it to her dog.

But Chancery has a secret.

She’s been watching their people’s finest warrior for years while she was supposed to be studying. He’s gorgeous, powerful, and a genius in all military applications—flawless in every way. Chancery thinks he may like her, too.

But he’s supposed to marry her evil twin, because their mother chose Judica as her heir, the future empress of one-sixth of the earth.

Chancery, sick of all the drama, decides to run away from court to live among the humans, but the day before she’s supposed to leave, she’s helping her prepare for a ball. She tries on her mother’s royal ring and the staridium stone reacts to her. She inadvertently fulfills an ancient prophecy of the woman who will unite the six families and save the entire world.

There’s no way her mother’s going to let her leave now, and things just became much more complicated.

Editorial Reviews

Publisher's Weekly said, "Displaced pulses with exciting incident, and even though this is the first book in a series the climax is consequential and exciting, even as it entices readers with the promise of more. Baker's writing is swift but potent, and scenes of action and romance both prove exciting. Chancery's exciting choices power the narrative from start to epic climax."

Great book

This was a great book to read, so many twists in it and a strong storyline. It is from Chancery's point of view. You get a great feel for her and you do start to judge the people around her including her younger twin sister. There will be a few spoilers but not many that will ruin this great story-line.According to tradition of the Evian's if you have twin girls you are to kill the first-born so there is no fighting for the throne, and you sell all males at birth, so that the other kingdoms will sell you theirs. The selling of males is to be sure your heir has suitable matches that are loyal to your kingdom and not the one they were born in.Judica, being the youngest, is Heir to their mother's throne. Chancery has no obligations and so she gets to spend time (for the most part) however she wants. The Empress wears a staridium ring and it is what signifies she is the rightful empress.Lots of plot twists to keep you guessing right to the end. I bought the first 3 books so am really looking forward to second book, even with it being from Judica point of view.

Interesting, but some flaws

This didn't grab me from the very beginning, but I started to enjoy it more as I continued reading. I found the characters and the overall theme of family conflict were believable and well explained. However, the idea of the ruling families being direct descendants ofAdam and Eve , with super powers seemed less believable. I probably won't be reading more in the series.

Strength in weakness

Chancery has always known that she was the weaker twin and should have been killed at birth. Judica her younger twin and as the youngest daughter is the heir, wishes Chancery had been killed and has made more than one attempt on her life. When their mother the empress is murdered on her 900th birthday, it is discovered that she was in the process of changing her heir to Chancery. Judica then challenges her twin - someone who hating hurting another let alone killing, and who had no battle experience - to a duel to the death for the throne. This is a well written book with many twists and turns, and the hidden motives and dealings are reminiscent of a clean version of the Game of Thrones. A very hard to put down book and I look forward to the next in the series.

Could not put it down

I got this book (plus audiobook) for free. It languished on my shelf … what a mistake. I could not put it down. It’s a fantasy about twin sisters - one who was never supposed to rule, and the other who was groomed from birth. It’s fast-paced, and the characters are believable. The narration was great. Now to decide whether to buy the next book in audio or ebook format!
