He only has eyes for revenge, and she only has eyes for him.

Isobel McEwan has been beholden to her chief for eight years—ever since he took her in and gave her a home after her parents died. So when he asks her to marry a rival laird to aid the clans in finding peace, she has little choice but to agree to his request. The only problem: She’s desperately in love with another man.

To free herself from the burden of unrequited love before entering into a marriage of convenience, Isobel devises a plan to journey to the healing well that has helped so many others, certain that if she can drink from its spring, she will be healed from her lovesickness for Kieran and prepared to marry the rival laird. But her chief will never willingly let her go, so she must sneak out in the dead of night and cross through dangerous lands alone.

After watching a rival clan kill his father in an ambush, Kieran Buchanan’s only ambition in life is to see them pay for what they did. Biding his time until he can accomplish his goal, Kieran dedicates his life to helping his uncle’s clan train and defend themselves. He’s sworn fealty to his uncle, so when the man asks him to track down Isobel and bring her home, he complies.

With the man she loves close on her tail, Isobel must hurry to the spring if she has any hope of callusing her heart against him. But what can she do when he catches up to her on enemy territory?

A Satisfying Read

Good character development: characters are not deeply defined, but presented in such a way that I cared about them. There are some mysteries present that are not resolved by the end of the book—probably will be in the two “sequels.” Isobel is a strong woman, to the surprise of those around her. Kieran is noble and loyal. Be warned that once you reach the epilogue, there is not much closure given—it’s much too short for that… but maybe that happens in the next book of the series. The book reads smoothly; it’s a relatively quick read. And as the title implies, it is a “clean Scottish romance.“ I will read the second book—I recommend this installment.

Och Aye! Ye dinna want ta miss this one!

Loved this! For a first time of writing a Scottish historical novel, this author did an outstanding job!I have loved all of her books that I have read previous to this one, so I was pretty excited to see she branched out her talent into wonderful Scottish storytelling! This book has so much! ~ A beautiful love story, castles, a loch, Clan feuds, a healing spring, a bit of Scottish lore, and of course a variety of Scottish hunks ~ sigh…The storyline is so verra good! The characters are excellent.I love the bits of historical facts woven in here and there.Along the journey there is suspense, danger, mystery, twists and turns, and oh yes ~ sweet clean romance ~ with some sparky kissing.I love the author’s use of just the right amount of Scottish words and dialogue throughout.*Also there is a glossary in the beginning to help with pronunciations and definitions. I loved and appreciated that.No sex. No bad language. If you like Scottish historical clean romance, then I recommend you give this one a try! I was impressed with the author's efforts and research. I’m so glad this is the beginning of a trilogy! I’m really looking forward to the next one in the series!!💜

Absolutely amazing!

Dear Mrs. Stockton,Do you know you are one of my favorite authors? Every single book you write (and I read), I love. They make me happy. Incredibly, wonderfully happy. Every book gets better and better! I just want you to know that I sincerely love your writing and your books. This new clean romance in Scotland series is no exception. I adored this book!It took me a minute to get into this book, I think because it’s a slightly different style. Of course, the different historical setting probably had something to do with that as well. That said however, I was involved in story within a few chapters and was then hooked to the very end. I became fully invested in Isobel and Kieran’s stories and couldn’t devour this book fast enough. Some things I loved about this wonderful book:The attention to history and detail was fantastic! It was clear to me that you had done a lot of research and, while I did not feel as though I were being “info dumped,” I came away feeling as though I had been given a good glimpse of the time period and the place. The balance was struck quite well.Speaking of these attentions, I loved your inclusion of Scottish folklore, clan disputes, tensions with the British, and traditions common to the people at the time (like the whole thing with women and shoes, which I found to be equal parts appalling and fascinating). AND!! And and and! You did a phenomenal job writing in the Scottish brogue. It was not difficult at all for me to hear the narrative in a Scottish brogue as I read and I LOVED THAT! You are genius! Did you find yourself speaking in that brogue while you wrote this? Because I only read it and I sure slipped a few times while talking to my family. They gave me strange looks but I felt a kinship to ye, even if it were only fabricated in m’wee mind.Isobel is so wonderful. Perhaps the only thing she did that I raised an eyebrow at was her decision to run away to Bongary Spring. Otherwise I just loved her! She was strong and brave and selfless.Flawed characters! Oh, Mrs. Stockton, the weaknesses! Is it odd to say that I love how well you write an imperfect character and the subsequent arc that leads that character away from their flaws into better people? Because I really, really love that. Kieran was the perfect example of this.I liked the alternating perspectives of so many characters and I am really looking forward to more stories from these people I’ve grown to love already. I definitely need to see more from Marion, Ian, and Miles.Lastly, I must talk about cliffhangers. You know I hate them. I really do. Unless I have the next book ready and waiting so I can dive right in. (Perhaps this disapproval is echoed in my own life as I dislike “cliffhangers” in real life even more; I am not a very patient person and don’t want to wait for resolutions! I want answers!) That being said, while the entire story arc hasn’t been completed, the sweet resolution to Isobel and Kieran’s story was quite perfect. So I forgive you for writing a dreaded cliffhanger, because at least my beloved characters were not left in mortal peril or their love story unresolved.Well Mrs. Stockton, I have perhaps prattled on long enough. Do you believe me when I say that I loved your book? Because I really, truly did. Insert a happy sigh here. While I dearly desire for the second book to be available yesterday, I shall satisfy myself with rereading this one in the meantime. And I am not truly upset about this arrangement (though I wouldn’t complain if the next book became available much sooner). You ever devoted fan,JessicaRating:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️**Many thanks to the author for the advance copy, which was offered and asked to review if desired. These are my very own thoughts.

A delightful Scottish romance!

A fun romance that transports you to the Scottish highlands, with political intrigue, feuding clans and handsome plaid wearing warriors. This romance was enjoyable and entertaining and quick to read. This is told from multiple points of view, not just the main two characters, which was unexpected but did provide insight and information that was not revealed to the main characters. The romance is a story about second chances, forgiveness and healing. The politics and romance each play a part in this story, and while the romance resolves at the end of this book, the reader gets the impression that turmoil is on the horizon for this clan we've come to know so well. Great atmosphere, great dialogue and history and an entertaining and fast read. Glad I gave this book a try!

I loved this book. The dialogue felt so natural, the story flowed smoothly, and the growth between the main characters was perfectly satisfying.Love that slow burn. And there were no moments where I felt torn from the story because of poor editing or historical inaccuracies. It was very well written. The heroine was clever, practical, kind and all the lovely traits that are enjoyable to read about, without feeling like she was too good to be true. I was so eager for her to reach her happy ending. Loved her and the hero together, what a well-made match.Romance is clean, nothing more than mild kissing.Violence is mild, there is some sparring and a few fights (guns, swords, fists) but nothing gruesome or distasteful. While this story is not a ‘standalone’ it does have some resolution to the end. It’s not a painful cliffhanger for the main couple. There’s an over arching plot that will connect the trilogy and I’m excited to read what happens next.Seriously, this book was worth the read.I recommend it to anyone looking for a lovely romance with a fun historical setting.
