Emily Carter and Devlin Baron were friends, good friends but still friends. They used each other as a plus one when family and business needs said, you need a date! The Charity Gala is one of those must have a events. Devlin being a Baron was always the single Bachelor singled out to be auctioned every year. He’s blond, handsome and wealthy, who always came through bringing in lots of money for the kids. That is until Courtney, of the many last names, Miller decided Devlin was going to be her next hubby! Run Devlin Run!
Emily and identical twin sister Elizabeth Louise Carter were at the Baron Charity Bachelor Auction to help keep Devlin out of Courtneys clutches. In fact out of any she-cat’s claws. Devlin was one of those confirmed bachelor types! He knew about Emily having a sister but had never met her. Seeing Emily across the way, he noted how different she looked. She had her hair up? When they met Devlin was not quite sure who he was looking at. When another Emily came up, he was sure his drink had been spiked! Looking at the two similar faces staring back at him he was so confused. Seeing Devlin acting startled was so amusing to the girls. They both just laughed as this was something that happened, a lot! Devlin looking at the correct Emily told her she never informed him she was a twin, let alone an identical twin. Liz was just like Emily, but acted so different. Devlin’s boat had been rocked for sure!
Chris has a way of descriptively showing when her hero/heroine has been blindsided or somehow sees their soul mate/life mate and recognizes their world has been turned upside down. She’s done this in every Baron and Farraday book, really every story she’s written. It’s like okay, now what? Also woven in are twists, turns, ups, downs, I didn’t see THAT one coming, and shenanigans. Life has a way of upsetting everyone’s applecart. It’s what you do with the apples after, that makes such a great story!
During the auction, Liz narrowly keeps Devlin out of Courtney’s claws, winning the bid at the last second. Courtney is so streamed. Liz seems really attracted to Devlin. The twists begin happening right away. They never seem to be able to even get to dinner, as one thing after another crops up. Finding out they work in allied fields, he in commercial real estate, she as an interior designer yields common ground. Trying to help Stuart from the Steer’s Den begin to recover from the costly fire, has them together helping Grams and rest of Barons put together a Charity Auction Gala. Liz and Emily offer to help setup and organize the event. Throw in a scheming, conniving Courtney who spits fire whenever she sees Liz, and you have a sputtering volcano waiting to erupt! Liz and Devlin are finding they like being around each other, its both calming and nerve wracking. Devlin is so different from Liz idea of a billionaire. Liz is alot like her sister but so very unique, throwing Devlin a huge curve! More time they spent together the closer they got. Others were beginning to notice Devlin & Liz too.
While helping with the auction Liz had an encounter with She Devil Courtney. Liz trying to be nice had enough of miz High and Mighty. Turning to go away, Courtney trips Liz sending her sprawling. Liz deciding she had enough, sticks out her boot and down Courtney goes. Next breath the she cat rumble is on! Emily sees what is going on, tries to forestall Devlin from interfering. All Devlin can see is Liz might get hurt. Emily quietly lets Devlin know Liz can take care of herself, being a brown belt and all!
